Monterey County Summer Music Program (MCSMP)

Monterey County Summer Music Program Chamber Orchestra, 2007

Monterey County Summer Music Program
Chamber Orchestra, 2007

Besides presenting world-class concert events, Chamber Music Monterey Bay is also deeply concerned about music participation and performance from childhood on. We know that many local schools lack music instruction; some children are never exposed to classical music, and many parents lack the funds for kids' private lessons or lessons at all. Yet, as youngsters who became life-long chamber music lovers, many of us have experienced the formative value of summer music camps first hand. So, we know that such programs improve our children's education and quality of life, develop self-esteem, social and leadership skills, and provide an experience now all too rare in public education.

These facts led us to establish the Monterey County Summer Music Program (MCSMP), a week-long summer day camp (9am - 3pm) for music students from local Monterey County schools, grades 4 - 12. It offers experienced coaching for strings, including: instruction for complete beginners in violin and cello; beginning, intermediate, and advanced string orchestras; chamber music for advanced students; beginning and intermediate music theory classes.  It began in 1998 with 37 string players and has accommodated up to 90 enthusiastic students. We look forward to growth in the years ahead and plan to remain a self-sustained community offering.

For many children chamber music via MCSMP is a unique experience. The MCSMP provides individual coaching, the thrill of daily ensemble, and performances for each group at week's end. It also allows children, unable to afford lessons, the experience of quality musical instruction. The MCSMP is the only local program that targets local music students. It also feeds students into the Youth Music Monterey (YMM) Youth and Honors Orchestras, and advanced chamber music classes at Monterey Peninsula College. Our staff includes:

Ms. Amy Anderson: Program Director
Mr. David Dally: Music Director
Mrs. Mildred Kline: Assistant Program Director

and we use other qualified teachers for coaching and instructing chamber music. Applications are sent to Youth Music Monterey participants and beginners in the All Saints School program and to all local public school and private music teachers.

The Visiting Artist Outreach (VAO) Program

Music from Copland House at Carmel Middle School, April 2007

Music from Copland House at Carmel Middle School, April 2007

The Visiting Artist Outreach (VAO) Program is in its 11th season.  Last season, our visiting professional chamber groups included free concerts for five education/outreach performances for local middle and high school students and one outreach performance at a local retirement facility for assisted-living residents.

Many financially disadvantaged students lack the opportunity to attend classical chamber music concerts, or speak to professional musicians, but through the VAO these children can meet world-class artists as people like themselves, rather than distant icons on a stage. This can foster chamber music as an important life-long activity and perhaps even a viable professional goal. The impact may be not only heart-warming but potentially limitless!

For more information K-12 music teachers in the Monterey County area should contact Amy Anderson at info@chambermusicmontereybay.org.

Kids Up Front and Free!

CMMB sponsors free tickets in the first three rows in the Sunset Center Theater for each of its concerts for Monterey County school students from 4th through 12th grade. These tickets can be reserved, starting one month before the performance date. Students under 16 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson International Trio Award

Trio con Brio Copenhagen

Trio con Brio Copenhagen

Chamber Music Monterey Bay is one of only 20 presenting organizations nationwide to participate in the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson International Trio Award (KLRITA). The biennial KLRITA is the first piano trio award in the world of classical music and was created to encourage and enhance the careers of accomplished and extraordinarily promising young piano trios (piano-violin-cello). The winning trio will be chosen every other year in perpetuity and will appear on each of the concert series of the 20 presenting organizations. Chamber Music Monterey Bay is proud and delighted to be among this select number, and is looking forward to presenting the first winning ensemble, the Claremont Piano Trio, on its 2005/06 season.

The second KLRITA has been awarded to the Trio con Brio Copenhagen. After a call for nominations sent internationally to classical music presenters, musicians, educators and other professionals, the trio was selected in New York by a panel comprising musicians Claude Frank, Joseph Kalichstein, Sharon Robinson, Michael Tree and Peter Wiley; and two KLRITA presenters, Cynthia Siebert, Friends of Chamber Music Kansas City, and Dallas Tidwell, Chamber Music Society of Louisville.
